It’s a crucial moment for the entertainment industry, and tensions are running high as negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP continue. The working members of the entertainment field are eagerly awaiting a resolution, but unfortunately, it seems like the AMPTP is not prioritizing their needs. Despite SAG-AFTRA’s efforts to reach an agreement, the AMPTP has chosen to leave the table waiting once again.
The situation has caught the attention of SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher, who recently took to social media to express her frustration. In her tweet, she called for the studio CEOs to resurface with a counterproposal, urging them to seal the deal and put an end to the nearly four-month-long strike. Fran Drescher’s use of social media as a tool to address the studios’ divisive tactics has only amplified her voice and brought more attention to the ongoing struggle.
Negotiations have been ongoing since October 24, but SAG-AFTRA has received no response from the AMPTP regarding their comprehensive counter proposal that was presented on October 28. Additionally, the studios have remained silent on the guild’s latest AI proposal for the past two days. It almost feels as if the studios have chosen to take an extended vacation, completely disregarding the concerns of the entertainment workers. This lack of urgency from the AMPTP is deeply disheartening for those affected by the strike.
Most of the discussions have taken place between SAG-AFTRA’s negotiating committee, led by its National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, and the AMPTP boss Carol Lombardini along with studio legal representatives. However, the absence of the studio CEOs, known as the “Gang of Four” – Donna Langley of NBCUniversal, David Zaslav of Warner Bros Discovery, Bob Iger of Disney, and Ted Sarandos of Netflix – has not gone unnoticed. Despite the finer points being reviewed, the presence of these CEOs is crucial to reaching a comprehensive agreement.
As talks continue on the 113th day of the strike, the lack of progress from the AMPTP is causing significant harm to the industry. The prolonged strike has had severe consequences, affecting countless professionals in the entertainment field. It is high time for the AMPTP to realize the gravity of the situation and come to a resolution that addresses the needs and concerns of the working members.
The industry anxiously awaits the day when the AMPTP will take the necessary steps to finalize a new SAG-AFTRA three-year contract and bring an end to this prolonged strike. Until then, the entertainment community must stand together, support one another, and continue advocating for their rights.
