SAG-AFTRA and the WGA have joined forces with GLAAD to bring awareness to the representation of LGBTQ+ characters in the entertainment industry. Adding to the significance, GLAAD has expanded its annual Studio Responsibility Index (SRI) to include major streaming services, uncovering vital insights into inclusive storytelling. The findings reveal that 28.5% of films from major studio distributors featured LGBTQ+ characters, shedding light on the growing importance of diverse representation.
The impact of inclusive storytelling cannot be overstated, as it empowers individuals to embrace their authentic selves and creates a more hopeful, empathetic society for everyone. Fran Drescher, President of SAG-AFTRA, passionately emphasizes the value of diverse representation on screen, stating, “Seeing diverse representation on screen is vital for empowering everyone to embrace their authentic selves.” However, the progress made in terms of inclusive representation is at risk due to the ongoing stalemate between the AMPTP companies and the entertainment industry.
Michele Mulroney, Vice President of the WGA, highlights the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ writers, especially in the face of insufficient pay and working conditions. These talented storytellers, armed with powerful narratives that have been long overdue, find themselves in jobs that don’t compensate them adequately to sustain a career. The refusal of AMPTP companies to engage in fair negotiations threatens to impede the progress made by LGBTQ+ writers, denying our culture impactful and authentic LGBTQ+ stories.
With GLAAD’s expanded 11th edition of the SRI, look to this comprehensive study as a road map for studios aiming to increase fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of LGBTQ+ characters. The report not only examines the quantity, quality, and diversity of LGBTQ+ characters in films released during the previous calendar year but also identifies priority areas and opportunities for improvement within major streaming services and studio distributors.
By including major streaming services such as Netflix, AppleTV+, and Amazon Studios, GLAAD’s Studio Responsibility Index adapts to the ever-evolving distribution styles and audience behaviors. This bold expansion sets the course for the next decade of assessing LGBTQ+ representation, ensuring that we continue to push for progress in fair and inclusive storytelling. Ten top studio distributors, including A24, Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Global, and more, were tracked to provide a comprehensive understanding of where LGBTQ+ characters are featured across their 2022 slates.
The collaboration between SAG-AFTRA, WGA, and GLAAD marks a significant effort to bring attention to the importance of diverse representation in the entertainment industry. Together, they advocate for fair negotiations and a productive bargaining table, encouraging the continuation of sharing diverse stories that reflect the reality of the human experience. Let us support their cause and create a vibrant landscape of inclusive storytelling that resonates with today’s youth, making our world a better and more accepting place for all.
